Systems for capturing Solar Thermal Energy are generally installed on rooftops as they are high areas not effected by shadows which receive excellent solar radiation.
So, to take advantage of the time where solar radiation is at its maximum, you need a rooftop which is facing south. These southward facing rooftops are optimum because, at midday, the sun is towards the south and its rays fall directly on the collectors.
The solar collectors are installed on the rooftop, and from there two tubes go to the water tank. The capacity of the tank depends on the amount of water consumed. The tanks are installed inside the building. The tubes are insulated to prevent heat loss.
The liquid circulating through the tubes is a special liquid whose composition is similar to anti-freeze. The liquid is pumped through the pipes, and when it reaches the water tank its heat is transferred to the water in the water tank, with a consequent rise in the water temperature.
The system has a central control system that measures the temperature in the collectors and in the water tank. This central control system controls the pump, turning it on when the water temperature is lower than the temperature in the collectors, causing the liquid to circulate until the water is heated. When the water reaches the required pre-programmed temperature, the pump switches off.
The system has safety systems that avoid pressure build ups and overheating, guaranteeing personal safety as well as the safety of the system itself.
