What is Photovoltaic Solar Energy?

Photovoltaic Solar Energy is based on the photovoltaic effect. This effect means that solar radiation falling on a semiconductor material causes a movement of electrons, thus generating electricity. The most common semiconductor material in use is Silicon, although there are several other semiconductor materials that can be utilized, such as Gallium Arsenide, Cadmium Telluride…etc.

Photovoltaic Solar Panels are assembled from photovoltaic cells produced using this type of semiconductor material. The majority of photovoltaic cells are manufactured using Silicon, and they may be either monocrystalline or polycrystalline, depending on the crystalline structure of the Silicon. The photovoltaic cells are joined together in series with electrical contacts that combine their output, giving the higher total power output of the photovoltaic module.

How is the sector regulated?

At present countries such as Spain, Germany and Japan are required by law to buy the energy fed into their grids by these photovoltaic installations.

The sales price is fixed by law as an incentive to encourage production of solar energy, giving these installations a cost recovery period that can vary between 7 to 10 years.

This type of photovoltaic plant ranges in size from small 20 KW installations to larger installations that reach 2 MW on industrial unit rooftops.

The electric energy produced in solar panels is fed into the electricity grid and is distributed to homes and companies according to their individual needs.
